Why are we here?
In 1994, a motor vehicle accident claimed the life
of a local teen-aged girl. Her death was listed as a
"preventable death." After her unfortunate death,
her parents were instrumental in the grass roots
effort to develop what is now the Colorado Trauma
system. Patient care is our highest priority. To
make this happen, it is important to find
mechanisms where Emergency medical and
Trauma System providers work together to meet
changes with an organized approach. Each

persons per square mile. Geographic as well
as demographic diversity both challenge and
strengthen our region. We have counties that
double, and in some cases nearly triple, the
population during seasonal periods. The
region has one National Park, The Great Sand
dunes. The Southern San Luis Valley borders
the State of New Mexico. There are four
highways that pass through our region, two of
which are the main transportation routes in
and out of the valley.
